Helleborus cyclophyllus, Boissier (1867)
- Perennial, pubescent; 10-15" in flower
- Leaves basal, pedate; 9-14 segments, central leaflet divided or
undivided
- Flowers green to yellow-green, 2-nearly 3" in diameter
- Albania, Greece, Bulgaria
- Woodland, scrub open areas from near sea level to 6000 feet
A yellowish to green flowered acaulescent species, Helleborus cyclophyllus
occurs in a rather broad range extending from southern Bulgaria and
Yugoslavia through Albania and northern Greece to the island of Corfu. Its
range approaches or overlaps that of several other species (e.g., Helleborus
odorus, Helleborus torquatus) on the Balkan peninsula. In some cases,
distinguishing it from similar species provides a challenge.
Its flowers can be over 2 inches in diameter, and the color varies from green to
very light green with pronounced yellow or cream tints. The leaves are bright
green and palmate. Though relatively absent in American gardens, the plant
has been used in Europe as a hopeful parent for the development of better
yellow hybrids.
